The
Magnitogorski Metallurgitscheski Kombinat (MMK) or Magnitogorsk Iron And
Steel Works as they are called now were founded in 1930. In 1932 blast
furnace No.1 produced the first pig iron.
By 1934 four blast furnaces and an open hearth steel making shop were
operating.
After the second world war Magnitogorsk became the largest steel mill in
the Soviet Union.
In the 1980ies, before the privatization the mill operated 17 sinter
plants,10 blast furnaces,1 BOF shop with two 350-ton vessels, 34 open
hearth furnaces ranging from 400-900 tons each and 11 rolling mills.
Today the plant still is the largest steel producer in Russia.
